Teachers’ Knowledge Level and Attitudes About Autism Spectrum Disorder

Teachers have a fundamental role in the support services and educational advancement of autistic children.This study aims to determine teachers’ knowledge levels and attitudes about autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study is descriptive, national single-center survey study. Target population is teachers work in preschool, primary school,special education centers. It was aimed to reach at least 286 participants.The questionnaire contains sociodemographic data and ASD knowledge level test.
RESULTS: %21,2 of respondents felt competent in providing training to students with ASD and %17,2 of them found the level of their knowledge sufficient. %70,6 of the teachers stated that inclusion is required. The rate of correct answers to the statements of teachers who participated in the training about autism was significantly higher than who didn’t.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Knowledge level of teachers about ASD is sufficient, but they feel inadequate due to the large number of students to deal with in the classroom.Life quality of these children with special needs will increase, if primary care physicians provide education and counseling to teachers to increase awareness and knowledge about autism.
Öğretmenlerin Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu Hakkındaki Bilgi Düzeyleri ve Tutumları

Öğretmenler, otistik çocukların destek hizmetlerinde ve eğitimsel ilerlemelerinde temel bir role sahiptir. Bu çalışma, öğretmenlerin otizm spektrum bozuklukları (OSB) hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerini ve tutumlarını belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Bu kesitsel çalışma betimsel, ulusal tek merkezli bir tarama çalışmasıdır. Hedef kitle okul öncesi, ilkokul ve özel eğitim merkezlerinde çalışan öğretmenlerdir. En az 286 katılımcıya ulaşılması hedeflenmiştir. Anket sosyodemografik verileri ve OSB bilgi düzeyi testini içermektedir.
BULGULAR: Katılımcıların %21,2'si OSB'li öğrencilere eğitim verme konusunda kendilerini yeterli hissetmekte ve %17,2'si bilgi düzeylerini yeterli bulmaktadır. Öğretmenlerin %70,6'sı kaynaştırmanın gerekli olduğunu belirtmiştir. Otizmle ilgili eğitime katılan öğretmenlerin ifadelere doğru yanıt verme oranı katılmayanlara göre anlamlı derecede yüksektir.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Öğretmenlerin OSB konusunda bilgi düzeyleri yeterli olmakla birlikte, sınıfta ilgilenmeleri gereken öğrenci sayısının fazlalığı nedeniyle kendilerini yetersiz hissetmektedirler. Birinci basamak hekimlerinin otizm konusunda farkındalığı ve bilgiyi artırmak için öğretmenlere eğitim ve danışmanlık vermesi, özel gereksinimli bu çocukların yaşam kalitesini artıracaktır.
